Community Yoga – Reflections from a Seva Project

When I was looking for an idea for my Seva project, I knew I wanted to do something that would have a positive impact on my community. We have a nice open clubhouse area for our neighborhood, so I decided I would like to offer free yoga classes to our residents. When I went to meet with our community manager, I uncovered a greater need that was available to address beyond just what I wanted to offer. Our manager shared with me that there were other individuals in our neighborhood who wanted to work together to create a greater sense of community and offer events throughout the month using our clubhouse space. I then designed a survey that was sent out to all community residents, and received a surprising number of positive responses. Since that time we have met to discuss our ideas and ambitions, and have created a community calendar for activities at the clubhouse. I am offering the classes I started out envisioning, but I have also established a dynamic group of individuals who are eager to work together to make our community a better place in a number of ways. I am grateful for the opportunity to have a positive influence in my neighborhood, and am pleased at the lasting effects it is creating.
