As a mom of two teens, a student, teacher and human my days are generally chaotic. One way I bring peace and calm into my life and that of my children is through walking dogs at the Animal House Shelter. We started doing this in the fall of last year, and in the beginning, it was also chaotic. The various animals, collars, harnesses, leashes, treats and just getting them out the door to walk was a bit of an adventure itself. When all three of us were walking dogs together, you can imagine the scene.
As we kept showing up and meeting new dogs, things became more calm. The animals are adopted very quickly from there so we never saw the same dog twice. Each time we arrived, we would meet a new animal and get to spoil him/her for the duration of our visit. In just an hour or so each time, we would get to know that dog, and at the same time get to know ourselves a little better.
We walked often during the past year and it became like a walking meditation. We focused on the moment and on the positive behavior of the dogs we were with. The days and the weather and the dogs were always different, but the act of showing up was always good for us all.
This reminded me of yoga. How showing up every day is meeting a different day and a slightly different self. How when we continue to show up and do what good we can, it makes a difference in our lives and the lives of those we interact with. I know the dogs were happier for the extra walks, treats, and love. We continue to walk them still, and we are happier each time we show up.
