For many Yogis, practicing in their own home offers a sense of comfort, ease, and privacy that you simply can’t get being in a studio. While there are so many benefits to practicing in-studio, living far from your local Yoga studio, or a busy schedule can make it difficult to commit to in-person classes. Many Yogis have developed a fulfilling at-home practice, particularly in the midst of the pandemic.
There’s an abundance of reasons an at-home practice can benefit students of all levels.
Time Flexibility – Whether you have ten minutes or ninety minutes, there’s no commitment to a certain class time when practicing from home. Often, we may neglect our practice thinking that we don’t have time for a commute to our studio, and full length class. Practicing from home allows you to take advantage of whatever time you have.
Comfort & Privacy – Maybe stepping into a studio full of people makes you feel a bit intimidated or overwhelmed. Practicing at home allows you to explore new and challenging postures and breathing techniques in a private setting, and eliminates any worry or comparison. A quiet room or corner at home can be crafted as a distraction-free space for meditation and reflection. Perhaps this solitude may allow you to fall deeper into your meditative state.
Accessibility to Props – When you have a dedicated practice space, you’re able to store everything you need in one place! Whatever tools or props you may need for your practice are available to you, and close by.
One of the most exciting parts of establishing an at-home practice is creating your own sacred space.
Looking to set up a dreamy studio in your own home? Here’s our advice:
Choose and Create your Space Mindfully
You don’t need much space to enjoy your practice, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take it seriously. What areas of your home bring you joy and comfort? Find a space that’s free from distraction and clutter. Most importantly, ensure you have enough space to move freely, and lay your mat out with ease.
What other items bring you joy and peace during your practice? Consider creating your own altar, adorning your space with candles or crystals, or incorporating your favorite all-natural herbs and scents (think sage, palo santo, or lavender). Find things that inspire you to show up to your practice.
Explore Virtual Classes
The beauty of having a Yoga space at home is that you get to choose how you practice. While a self-practice can be rich and enjoyable, trying a variety of virtual classes gives you the opportunity to explore different teachers and teaching styles. With virtual classes, you have the flexibility to start and stop your class, or to move at your own pace.
